I had this same problem the last time I tried the direct online upgrading to The Burning Crusade and just gave up. The irony was that Blizzard had accepted the same credit card for my monthly subscription.
This time I had more at stake. I just hit level 60 and could not earn any more XP [...]

That FFmpeg Problem on Vista

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Words cannot express how much I *loathe* Vista. Those of you who have followed my blogs back when must recall .
Anyway… this one is like a mosquito buzzing around your head. You try to ignore it, hoping it will go away. Then get annoyed and try to slap it but it fail. Finally, like today, [...]

Black Screen on Monitor Fix

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

This happened to me twice. Once on my Lenovo and today again on hubby’s desktop. After booting and running the Windows start up screen, the monitor blanks out. Something about analog or digital. I just wanted to shake the monitor into waking up again.
Anyway, with the laptop it was easy since it works with an [...]

WoW – the Fix

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

After persisting another day, I eliminated the final possibility. I read this forum post about the Hostage of Comodo Firewall Pro and knew this must be it! Firewall conflict – that’s what the nice Blizzard lady Leah wrote and told me. So here’s what I did.
In Vista (yes, still using that confounded thing), under Services, [...]

WoW Woes

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

It is now day 2 and I have solved the “Tracker not responding” problem. Turns out WoW doesn’t like Comodo Firewall such that even turning it off doesn’t work. When I finally threw in the towel and uninstalled it, the Launcher worked and downloaded the latest patch.
Now when I restarted it, the News page refused [...]

BEFORE You Subscribe to WoW…

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Make sure you patch the game first.
I did that before signing up for the Burning Crusade free trial but somehow after getting an itch to run through the Barrens again, this time I stupidly went to subscribe via Paypal BEFORE patching.
I’m not worried about a whole day lost patching the game but possibly not being [...]

SD Card Reader Down

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

So my SD card reader on my Lenovo v100 has taken its last breath and said farewell to this cruel world. But wait! I still need to download a whole bunch of photos!
While checking the SD Memory Card Properties under Device Manager in Control Panel, here’s the crap message I get:
Windows cannot load the device [...]

Vista Adventures: The Holy Grail of Vista

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Recently the idea of watching DVDs at night enticed me to get Vista to actually run them. Previously futile attempts ended in jumpy DVDs, black screens with alien sounds, and a wadful of hair that mysteriously found itself in my hand.
Finally, my friend Jason whispered the solution to me: Vista Codecs… almost like it was [...]

How to speed up the performance of Vista? Simple…
1. Turn off Aero
Yes, you bought the upgrade for the pretty but it seriously lags your computer. I finally turned it off after yanking out wads of hair in frustration. Save your hair, especially if you’re a little short, and turn off Aero. Download some pretty themes [...]

Blue Screen of Death nv4.disp Infinite Loop Bug

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

This transpired over a few weeks. Yes. I got lazy to find a fix. Here’s the sequence of events as they unfolded.
First, the computer (running on XP) hung, probably got kicked accidentally too often due to inopportune placement next to my feet. Mouse pointer frozen. I hesitated to restart but I did.
Then the screen went [...]
